In India, each part of the country has its own variety of apparels which are beautiful in their own ways but “Rajputi Poshak” has a class of its own. People from other sections of society other than Rajputs have started adopting the “Rajputi Poshak” as their festive apparel. The Rajput women in “Rajputi Poshak” can be identified from others as the grace of wearing it reflects in how beautifully the dress is handled (The Poshak would wear you and you would wear it!!). fabricated.

Rajputi Poshak consists of:

The dress consists of four garments which together sum up as “Poshak”; these are “Kanchali”, “Kurti”, “Ghagra” and “Odhani”. To make you understand what are these and how they are worn here is a quick description, firstly “Kanchali”, it is inner wear with sleeves which covers upper body of a woman. “Kurti” is a sleeveless blouse worn over the “Kanchali”; it covers the upper body of women from neck to waist. “Ghagra” is a pleated skirt like garment worn below “Kurti” which covers the body from waist to feet. And last of the lot is “Odhani” is a long veil which is used to cover the head, face and body, this provides world known grace to the “Rajputi Poshak”.

“Rajputi Poshak” on the basis of its use and form is categorized in two types, lighter range and heavier range. The lighter version is worn by Rajput women every day; it is a simple “Rajputi Poshak” with very light work (usually Gotta Patti) over it. The heavier range is worn on festivals like “Teej” and “Gangor”.

From making point of here are a few types of “Rajputi Poshak”-

Few types are Zardosi Poshak, Gotta Patti Poshak, Zari Poshak, and Kundan Poshak.

Zardosi is used in “Rajputi Poshak” to give it a rich feel. It is the type of embroidery which involves incorporation of tiny thin metal in the piece of clothing. This gives the clothing a complete newness.

This type of embroidery involves use of gold and Gotta Patti Poshak, this art have its origin in Rajasthan it has also been copyrighted by the state of Rajasthan.

Back in the days of Kings and Queens, the Gotta Patti dresses were decorated by real gold and silver metals, but now as the time has passed and the metals have become really costly.

The use of precious metal has decreased and instead of small pieces of Zari ribbon are applied on the dresses with “Kinari work” to create sophisticated designs.

Zari Poshak, Zari has its origin to Banaras; it is generally a brocade of tinsel thread which is meant for weaving and embroidery. Zari work on a “Rajputi Poshak” magnifies its beauty to a newer level.

Kundan Poshak, The Kundan is an exceptional form of art in these stones are added to highly refined gold and then it is put on the “Rajputi Poshak” which makes the clothing look spectacular.

silver threads to make elaborate designs on the clothing. Copper wires with a golden or silver polish are used with silk threads to ensure that the clothing looks awesome when finished. Last but not the least the magnificent effect of studded pearls and precious stones bring the Royal Rajputi heritage on a piece of clothing.

Making of “Rajputi Poshak”

Making of “Rajputi Poshak” starts with the selection of right cloth, selection of right fabric is the key for making a magnificent dress. Customarily, the dress is fabricated from pure georgette, chiffon, pure satan or crape. But the choice of fabric is highly dependent on the occasion, style and budget requirements of the buyer. Next important step is coloring, this step involves the transformation of a simple grey/white cloth into a Rajput legacy. Various colors like red, blue, green and orange, etc. are embellished on the fabric. The highly contrasting colors used on the “Rajputi Poshak” defy the color of the desert and brings balance to life.

Once the fabric and color part of the process is complete, the “Rajputi Poshak” now requires amazing artistry. No “Rajputi Poshak” is complete without the intricate patterns and elegant designs made my artistic hands that spell magic; all the polishing and embroidery work transforms the cloth into a unique “Rajputi Poshak”.

However now you know how a simple piece of cloth transforms to a magnificent piece of artistry. All the hard work that is done behind the scenes keeps the history of Rajputana alive to be cherished by generations to come.
